An e-Petition was launched on 1 September by The Association of Event Organisers (AEO) to stop the demolition of its exhibition centres which is one of London's primary corporate event venues. The basis of the petition is the involvement of the exhibition centres in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The plans involve demolishing corporate event venue the exhibition centre and building over 7,500 new homes. However, the AEO claims that there is a conflict of interest with the London Mayor's office as it involves land assets that are held by Transport for London, which has close links to the mayor's office. In addition Earls Court has contributed more than £1b to the economy.
The petition states"London is short of event space, when the UK aims to promote itself as a global business centre, and is losing revenue and trade to other countries. The plan will substantially contract the event industry; reduce the number of visitors, all after the Olympics elevated the city's status to a global audience."
Chris Perkins runs Cue Media in Birmingham and London, helping a range of businesses in the UK, Europe and beyond to design and stage eventsfrom small meetings to major corporate events and everything in between at some of London's major corporate event venues. He says:
"We have produced a few events at Earls Court in London it would be a shame to see it go. On the other hand there are still plenty of great venues in London and around the country.Earls court is a great venue with a long and prestigious history of hosting all kinds of events from live sport to concerts. It would be a great shame to lose such an iconic events venue from London's roster of events sites.
That being said there could be some positives to come from the closure of Earls Court. For example, it could provide opportunities for venues outside of London to host events that they might not have had the opportunity to in the past. This in turn could boost the events sector outside of the city.
Even if Earls court is lost there are still plenty of great venues in and around London that are capable of stepping into the shoes of Earls Court should it fall."
