Dr. Nolan Karp, co-founder of New York City's acclaimed KCNY Plastic Surgery, is finding an ever-growing number of patients inquiring about the leading-edge "nipple sparing" mastectomy (NSM) procedure. While a total mastectomy procedure requires nipple removal and reconstruction, a NSM procedure aims to preserve breast skin as well as the nipple areola complex.
"Facing breast cancer can be one of the trying periods in a woman's life," explains Dr. Karp. "Thankfully, mastectomy and reconstruction procedures have grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years." According to patient resource, breastcancer.org, "About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime."
"In the past, many of these cancer patients were only given the option of a total mastectomy procedure. This required the removal of the breast exterior, including the nipple," explains Dr. Karp. "Today, many women are learning that they are candidates for a NSM procedure. In most cases, this means an overall better cosmetic result."
Of course, NSM procedures are not appropriate for every patient. According to Dr. Karp, "There are certain factors that will preclude a woman from undergoing this procedure. Examples include circumstances when a tumor is very close to the nipple or in cases when a patient has exceptionally large breasts.
When asked about the future of the NSM procedure, Dr. Karp concluded succinctly: "While the NSM procedure isn't yet standard practice, new research is pointing toward its effectiveness and safety. I encourage mastectomy patients to explore all their surgery options - including this one - with a board certified plastic surgeon."
