Dr. Mark Schwartz, a plastic surgeon on Manhattan's Upper East Side, is seeing more and more patients getting "summer ready" with less-invasive procedures like BOTOX®, Ultherapy®, and fillers. While cosmetic surgical procedures also continue to see growth nationwide, a remarkable number of patients are now choosing the needle over the scalpel for the summer.

"Less-invasive procedures have become incredibly popular. Most of my patients are busy people and are always looking for more results and less down-time," explains. Dr. Schwartz. "And, there's no time of year when patients are more interested than right now."

According to a recent report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were over 12 million minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures performed in 2011. That means for every one surgical cosmetic procedure that was performed in the US, seven minimally-invasive procedures were performed.

"Summer is an ideal time for less invasive work," explains Dr. Schwartz. "These procedures often result in little to no down-time, so patients don't have to give up their vacations to recover." Accordingly, at Dr. Schwartz's Manhattan office, these less-invasive options are extensive. Treatments include BOTOX, JUVÉDERM, Ultherapy, laser skin resurfacing and much more.

"If I had to point to the top non-surgical procedure in terms of popularity, it would have to be BOTOX," explains Dr. Schwartz. "It's the number-one cosmetic procedure in the US." BOTOX is essentially a muscle relaxer that works to diminish facial creases, most commonly frown lines, crow's feet, and lines across the forehead. According to the ASPS, there were 5,670,788 BOTOX procedures performed in 2011, up a remarkable 5% in one year alone.

Asked about the popularity of these "summer treatments," Dr. Schwartz concluded succinctly, "Summer is the time we're relaxing and getting out more. It's no surprise that everyone wants to look their very best."
