When it comes to surgical expertise, it is tough to top the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons. For more than 25 years, the AACS has certified top surgeons nationwide. It is no surprise that their medical journal, Surge, highlights only the best in the field of plastic surgery. It is also probably no surprise that Dr. Kevin Sadati of Orange County's Gallery of Cosmetic Surgery is prominently featured in this month's issue.
It is well known among the cosmetic community that art imitates life and to make someone beautiful, a certain degree of artistic knowledge is necessary. In the article titled, "A Stroke of Genius: Where Fine Art Meets Cosmetic Surgery" writer Larry Guthrie explores the unique relationship between art and the practice of plastic surgery. From a patient standpoint, the closer to art the surgeon is, the better the result will be. Artists tend to see things as their symmetries relate to each other, and that is an important concept to achieve overall balance. "When you speak of the face as a work of art or canvas, it helps the patient understand the entirety of their beauty," Sadati states in the article. It is precisely this holistic approach to his surgery that endears Dr. Sadati to his patients.
In and of itself, medicine is a stressful occupation. The stakes for surgeon's and especially cosmetic physicians spikes on the stress scale. While Orange County cosmetic surgeons are highly trained and are experts in their specialties, they realize they are responsible for a patient's permanent appearance. That fact coupled with the inherent stressors of the procedure can take a toll on the physician. As a form of decompression, Sadati leans on self expression because "art helps soften the science," he says. The last thing a patient needs is a surgeon who is wound a little too tight.
The practice of art yields benefits beyond relaxation. By continuing to perfect artistic ability, the doctor constantly hones his ability to recognize asymmetries that measure in the millimeters. That kind of attention to detail is what separates a good surgeon from the best surgeons. Aesthetics entails visualizations and consideration in all three dimensions and small changes in one area can result in large changes in a patient's overall appearance. In-depth knowledge of the inter-related nature of aesthetical construction is absolutely required for high performing plastic surgeons. Art exemplifies the nature of beauty through balance. If you have ever looked a picture and thought that something was off, you were probably right. We are programmed to look for balance and if something throws it off, even by a miniscule amount, we perceive it as flawed. Concerning people, these flaws are a part of life that the cosmetic surgeon strives to correct either through reconstruction or purely aesthetic procedures. In these cases, the more artistic background the surgeon has the higher degree of positive perception by others.
The real challenge for top surgeons such as Sadati is the fusion between aesthetics and functionality. Altering anatomical parts that are functioning normally is a tricky proposition. Altering a body part it so that it is more beautiful while still performing its inherent functions is exponentially difficult. This where the three dimensional visualization, something learned through the study of art, helps plastic surgeon's like Dr. Sadati provide a higher level of care; a level of care worthy of mention in a highly respected medical journal.
