If you walk into a fast food restaurant today, you will find that everything is automated and you are able to be served quickly and efficiently while there. If you run a small or a medium sized business, wouldn’t it be great to receive the same promptness of speed and resolution of your IT issues? However, you understand it costs a significant investment to set up a dedicated IT department of your own. It makes sense then to outsource the job. When you look for a company to entrust the job to, there are several aspects to look at.
The company should have the necessary manpower
When you are going to automate your organization’s systems with the technology, the company from which you are going to outsource the job should have the right experts who are able to provide services both remotely and onsite. It’s important for your IT provider to be available during the hours of operation your business is open to respond to issues that come up. It’s no use having an IT Provider who is closed when you need them the most! You may also decide to offload the responsibility of having any hardware onsite and migrate to the cloud. Does your provider have the skills and certification to look after your networking infrastructure, or just a subset of your IT systems? And can you look to your IT provider for consultation, and engage them in future projects? Outsourcing your IT needs is a big step. These are a fraction of the questions that should be asked.
Provision of the necessary hardware
The company you hire should ideally be able to provide you with the necessary hardware and successfully install it. This could range from computers, servers, telephony, networking devices to printers, laptops and anything in between. Purchasing the correct hardware and ensuring it’s compatible with your existing applications can be a lengthy process that often means involvement with several different vendors. Moreover, several vendors will often compete to sell the same piece of hardware to you, and it’s important to determine what’s the right fit for your company.
Software solutions
And apart from hardware, what about the software element? Will your IT provider support your business applications, accounting software and custom made bits and pieces? Do they provide backups of your data for you and guarantee a minimum amount of data loss should the worst happen? An IT Provider should always have in place procedures for the restoration of that data, continual monitoring to ensure backups are completing successfully and periodic test restore to make sure that data can be restored in the event of a failure.
