Ukraine’s newly elected president, Petro Poroshenko, is expected to sign a landmark trade deal establishing free trade between the European Union and the Ukraine soon after he is inaugurated as head of state on June 7th. Poroshenko said very recently during a meeting in Warsaw with Austrian President Heinz Fischer, “I’m ready to sign the economic part of the Association Agreement and to enter a free trade zone with the EU immediately after the inauguration.” This trade agreement with the EU has been at the heart of Ukraine’s political crisis over the past six months. The former president, Viktor Yanukovich, who was backed by Moscow, had turned his back on the agreement at the last minute. Yanukovich’s decision to back out of the agreement and seek a $15 billion bailout from Russian instead led to the protests against him and to him being ousted as president.
At the recent meeting with Petro Poroshenko and the Austrian President Heinz Fischer a plan was also discussed to stabilize the situation in east Ukraine and to put as a top priority measures to restore law and order, Poroshenko’s press office said. Poroshenko’s office also sent a statement that stated that the signing and implementation of the European Union deal will give an opportunity for anti-corruption measures to be passed, and to bring about positive new reforms in the Ukraine. Another sent to Reuters by Poroshenko’s office stated, "Petro Poroshenko considers it essential not to delay the signing of the economic part of the association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union." Poroshenko himself very recently said (as quoted by ITAR TASS News Agency), “…and that is why I'm ready to sign the economic part of the association agreement and launch the free trade zone with the EU immediately after the inauguration."
European Union leaders already signed chapters of the part of the agreement dealing with political corruption in the Ukraine back in March, which lent support to the Ukraine soon after Crimea was occupied by Russian forces. Poroshenko also hopes the agreement will help “restore peace” in the Ukraine. “I ran for president with the slogans of peace and that is why I consider it necessary to establish peace in Ukraine," Poroshenko was quoted as saying by the government press office.
