Over time, even individuals of otherwise normal body weight can develop visibly sagging, loose skin around the lower abdominal area. This loose, sagging skin is almost always unresponsive to diet or exercise, which leads some men and women to consider surgical intervention.

Fortunately, Long Island-based plastic surgeon Dr. Charlotte Rhee explains that that a partial abdominoplasty (also known as the mini tummy-tuck) can help correct this issue. "Loose, excess skin can appear on the body due to various reasons, including significant changes in weight, or genetics," Dr. Rhee explains, "One of the most common reasons women seek out this surgery is to correct loose skin caused by pregnancy. "

"A mini-tummy tuck removes unwanted excess skin, but it does not substitute a weight-loss procedure," Dr. Rhee continues, "Patients who are looking to lose weight through surgery are not candidates for this procedure. Ideal patients for a mini tummy-tuck are those who are in otherwise good health, are close to their ideal body weight, and simply want to restore the appearance of their lower abdominal area."

According to Dr. Rhee, a mini tummy-tuck will be performed under general or local anesthesia, although that will depend on the amount of fat and skin being removed. During the procedure, Dr. Rhee will make a small incision just above the pubic area. The skin will then be lifted up to the navel, removing fat and tightening muscles in the lower abdomen. The procedure will usually take 1 to 2 hours to complete. Dr. Rhee explains that a mini tummy-tuck is quite similar to a standard tummy tuck, although it is less invasive, requiring shorter incisions, and the navel does not have to be repositioned during a mini tummy-tuck.

Dr. Rhee says that a mini tummy-tuck offers patients many benefits, including a shorter recovery time, and less scarring. Once the surgery is complete, incisions will be closed with sutures. Strenuous exercises and activities should be avoided for several weeks after, although many patients are able to return to their normal activities within 2 weeks of surgery. Dr. Rhee works closely with each of her patients, both before and after surgery, to guarantee they are receiving the best care possible.
