Myofascial Pain Syndrome is a chronic pain disorder, which usually develops due to a traumatic event, such as a car accident, or repetitive muscle overuse. This pain is usually confined to the muscle itself, or to muscle near a painful joint. Areas of muscle soreness, or tightness are known as "trigger" or "tender" points.
Patients with this condition often find themselves developing muscle soreness, tightness, or pains muscle located near a painful joint. These impacted areas are known as "trigger" or "tender" points.
Dr. Michael L. Gross, of New Jersey-based Active Orthopedic & Sports Medicine, says that patients who experience chronic muscle pain should consult an experienced doctor right away, so that the doctor can determine if the patient is inflicted with Myofascial Pain Syndrome. The most recognizable signs of the condition include deep, persistent pains in a muscle, as well as difficulties sleeping due to these severe pains. The condition is diagnosed with a physical exam, during which the doctor will evaluate the tension in certain areas of the body.
According to Dr. Gross, treatment methods for Myofascial Pain Syndrome are nonsurgical. Most successful long-term treatment methods will involve an individualized cardiovascular exercise plan, which Dr. Gross says will help strengthen the inflicted muscles and restore a patient's physical well-being. Some of the exercises which are known to help alleviate painful symptoms include vigorous walking, swimming, and bicycling.
Additional therapies, such as massage therapy, and acupuncture, are also beneficial for patients with this condition. Another common used technique is "dry needling," which involves inserting a needle around any areas of tenderness, to relieve pain and restore a patient's comfort. Dr. Gross adds that anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, and muscle relaxants are also helpful in reducing symptoms associated with Myofascial Pain Syndrome. Dr. Gross adds that persistent cases may require additional treatment, such as stress management, biofeedback, or psychotherapy. Patients can also help alleviate their symptoms by quitting smoking, and avoiding caffeine beverages.
