Facelifts are among the most common procedures in cosmetic plastic surgery today. The facelift procedure is designed to treat the appearance of wrinkles, sagging skin, and create a more youthful, refreshed appearance for the patient.

Dr. Douglas Humphreys of MacLeod Plastic Surgery in Calgary says that patients normally seek facelifts because they are bothered by visible signs of aging in the face or neck area. Some of the signs of aging corrected by a facelift include deep creases in the lower eyelids, loss of muscle tone in the lower face that creates the appearance of jowls, and loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw, which can cause the appearance of a double chin. Facelift surgery targets the mid-to-lower face, including the cheeks, mouth, neck, or chin.

Dr. Humphreys explains that, during the facelift procedure, an incision is made around the ear. In some cases, the incision may extend into the scalp. The surgical techniques used will depend on the structure of each patient's face, as well as their desired goals of surgery. Most techniques, according to Dr. Humphreys, will include sculpting or relocating the underlying fat, muscles, and deep tissues. Facelifts are usually performed under general anesthesia, and take 2 to 4 hours to complete. Dr. Humphries adds results of a facelift can be seen immediately.

According to Dr. Humphreys, the main goal of a facelift is to trim and reshape skin to create results that look natural. He adds that facelifts will enhance a patient's appearance, but will not drastically change one's appearance. Following a facelift procedure, patients may experience side-effects such as mild discomfort, bruising, and swelling. These side-effects are normally temporary, and can be treated with over-the-counter painkillers. Patients are usually advised to avoid strenuous activity for several weeks after surgery.

Dr. Humphreys says that the best candidates for facelift surgery are adults who are in their 40s, 50s, or 60s, who want to improve their appearance. It is also important that patients have realistic expectations of the surgery, since a facelift cannot reverse the aging process. Ideal candidates for facelift surgery should be in good physical health, and non-smokers, Dr. Humphreys adds.
