Conjunctivitis, more commonly known as "pink- eye", is one of the most common eye conditions. This condition occurs when the conjunctiva, a thin membrane that covers the inner surface of the eyelid and white area of the eyeball, becomes irritated. This causes the white area of the eye to become red, and irritated, in appearance.
Doctors at Oregon's Allergy, Asthma and Dermatology Associates, P.C. (AADAPC) explain that conjunctivitis can be caused by various factors, including viruses, irritants, or bacterial disease. However, conjunctivitis is also commonly linked to allergies. Doctors at AADAPC provide their patients with diagnosis and treatments for allergy conjunctivitis.
Allergy conjunctivitis, unlike regular conjunctivitis, is not considered highly contagious. It can occur in patients of any age, and will usually occur in both eyes at the same time. The most common symptoms of allergy conjunctivitis include redness in the white of the eye, blurred vision, itchiness, and swelling of the eyelid. Doctors at AADAPC recommend that patients who experience any of these symptoms consult a doctor to make certain that the conjunctivitis is allergy-related, and not caused by an infection.
AADAPC's doctors offer both evaluation and treatment for allergy conjunctivitis patients. Once it has been determined that allergies are the main cause of conjunctivitis, treatment can begin. AADAPC's treatment plan includes Immunotherapy, which are allergy shots designed to reduce the signs and symptoms of the condition, as well as medicines and eye drops reduce redness, swelling, and itchiness in the eye. Symptoms of allergy conjunctivitis will usually be relieved following any of these treatments.
The staff at AADAPC also recommends that patients with allergic conjunctivitis avoid rubbing their eyes, wearing makeup or contact lenses, and using artificial tears to relieve any feelings of burning and itching. While allergy conjunctivitis can often be unpleasant, it is still quite treatable.
