NYC dermatologist Dr. Steven Victor is speaking out regarding the importance of getting Botox from a reputable dermatologist or plastic surgeon. The FDA has recently announced that hundreds of doctors and nurses may be injecting patients with an unapproved Botox-like product.
"Patients choose to get Botox injections for a myriad of reasons," Dr. Victor explains when asked to speak regarding the popular cosmetic procedure. "Along with diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, Botox is also used to treat migraine headaches and excessive sweating.
"However, no matter why a patient gets Botox, they should make sure that their doctor is injecting them with real Botox, and not a fake, substitute product," Dr. Victor warns.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently announced that more than 350 doctors and nurse practitioners may be injecting patients with a fake Botox-like product, while claiming that it is the real thing. This unlicensed product has not been approved by the FDA and comes from a Canadian supplier.
Because it does not have FDA approval, the product has not been deemed safe or effective. Furthermore, FDA authorities are warning doctors and consumers that these knock-off Botox drugs may have been contaminated, as well as improperly stored and transported.
Dr. Victor, who is the founder of Victor Dermatology and Rejuvenation in Manhattan and is on the faculty in the Department of Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital, warns that the unscrupulous doctors who are injecting this counterfeit drug may not be fully aware of its potential risks. The FDA cannot confirm that the manufacture and handling of this product follows U.S. regulations, and the unauthorized injectable can pose serious health risks to patients.
To make sure that they are receiving the real thing, Dr. Victor urges patients to only receive treatment from board-certified dermatologists or plastic surgeons. Patients can also look into whether their doctors exclusively purchase Botox products directly from the manufacturer or from state-licensed wholesale drug distributors in the U.S.
