While many women seek breast enhancement or reduction surgery to enlarge the size of their breasts, a surprising number of women seeks the procedure to achieve breast symmetry.
Long Island plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Epstein explains that breast asymmetry is when a woman's breasts appear different from one another in size, form, or position. While the exact cause of breast asymmetry is unknown, possible contributors include hormonal changes, traumatic injury, scoliosis (curvature of the spine), or even an underlying skeletal condition. While slight differences in breast size or shape are normal, breasts that differ from one another by at least one cup size can be extremely uncomfortable, and cause a fair amount of psychological stress.
Dr. Epstein says that one of the primary goals of breast augmentation surgery is to leave a woman with symmetrical breasts. Asymmetrical breasts can be rectified by surgery, either enlarging the smaller breast, or reducing the size of the larger breast so both are more equal in size. "At the initial consultation, I will help the patient determine what procedure is right for them, and what sort of look they would like to achieve through the surgery," says Dr. Epstein.
"During augmentation surgery to correct asymmetrical breasts, the smaller breast needs to be filled in, while the larger breast will be left under-filled, essentially a compromise situation," Dr. Epstein continues, "With reduction surgery, the larger breast will be reduced in size and shaped to more closely matches the appearance and shape of the smaller breast. Patients who undergo this type of breast augmentation will look and feel much more confident, as well as more comfortable."
Dr. Epstein says that, this procedure can be performed on women of nearly any age, who are looking to correct the appearance of unbalanced breasts. The procedure is highly-personalized, like other breast augmentation surgeries, and Dr. Epstein works closely with patients to make sure that the surgery meets all of their needs.
