Each year, millions of American adults choose to undergo hip replacement surgery. Hip replacement surgery, which is most common among older adults, is when a damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial prosthetic.

New Jersey-based Dr. Michael Gross, of Active Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, explains that hip replacement surgery is beneficial for patients in many ways. Mr. Gross says that the primary goal of any hip replacement surgery is to replace the parts of a hip joint that have been either injured, or severely damaged. Most commonly, patients who seek the surgery have broken a hip, or are having severe pain in the area due to arthritis.

Dr. Gross says that hip replacement surgery can help relieve arthritis, as well as other degenerative conditions, after non-surgical treatments, such as medications, have failed. As these conditions progress, the cartilage covering the hip joint slowly wears away. This often results in severe pains, stiffness, and a loss of motion in the hip area. Hip replacement surgery is considered the best way of correcting these issues.

According to Dr. Gross, traditional hip replacement surgery involves making an incision several inches long just above the hip joint. Another common technique, known as "minimally-invasive hip replacement," is used by many surgeons is making one of two smaller incisions to remove the hip. This technique also offers the patient a shorter recovery period, as well as a minimal amount of scarring. During the procedure, the patient will be under anesthesia. The damaged cartilage and bone is removed during surgery, before Dr. Gross will place the artificial replacement into the joint. Dr. Gross says that the replacement joint is typically made out of metal, plastic, or ceramic. The procedure may take a few hours to complete.

The surgery, the patient is taken to a recovery room for several hours. Patients will be monitored until they awaken, and will then spend three or four days in the hospital. Following a hospital stay, patients will usually need to take part in a physical therapy program. Dr. Gross explains that physical therapy will help strengthen the hip, and help restore full movement to the joint. Full recovery will take up to six weeks, although Dr. Gross adds that follow-up visits will be necessary to ensure there are no complications.
