Over time, many women experience noticeable changes in their breasts, including a loss of firmness or shape, which cause breasts look "saggy" or drooped. This loss of form in the breasts can be caused by numerous factors, including aging, pregnancy, sufficient weight-loss, and breastfeeding. Fortunately, breast lift surgery can correct this problem.
Dr. Charlotte Ann Rhee, of Long Island Plastic Surgery in Huntington Station, New York, explains that breast lift surgery is extremely beneficial for women. She says that breast lifts rejuvenate the breast, by trimming excess skin and tapering breast tissues, creating a more lifted, youthful shape. Dr. Rhee notes that, while a breast lift will improve the look and shape of breasts, it will not change the size or fullness of the breasts. She suggests women who want to significantly change the size of their breasts consider a breast augmentation or reduction instead.
According to Dr. Rhee, breast lifts are performed under general anesthesia, and normally take around 3 hours to complete. The type of technique used during surgery will depend on factors such as a patient's breast size, the amount of excess skin being trimmed, and how badly the breasts are drooping. During the surgery, Dr. Rhee makes the necessary incisions, and reshapes the breast tissue until she has achieved the patient's desired look. Excess skin around the areola of the breast is also removed, and the areola will usually be repositioned or enlarged. Finally, Dr. Rhee will remove any remaining loose breast tissue. Once surgery is complete, stitches will close the skin. The newly-lifted breasts are then wrapped with gauze.
Dr. Rhee says that patients may experience bruising, swelling, or mild discomfort following surgery. Patients should also expect to wear a soft support bra for about a month while they recover. Dr. Rhee also explains that, though breasts lifts are extremely beneficial, they are also not for everyone. Patients who do not smoke, are generally healthy, and have realistic expectations of the surgery, are the best candidates for a breast lift. Finally, Dr. Rhee says, patients report seeing results almost immediately after surgery, and are extremely satisfied with their new look.
