While many people love leaving a dentist's office with a healthy, sparkling smile, others dread dental visits. Even well into adulthood, some people associate visiting a dentist with pain and anxiety. However, avoiding treatment due to fear will not help, since any existing dental issues may become worse if left untreated.
Fortunately, Dr. Kim Orth, of Core Dental in Calgary, is able to put even the most anxious patient at ease with sedation dentistry. Dr. Orth explains that sedation dentistry allows patients to relax during a procedure, aided by sedatives. He adds that anyone with a dental phobia or fear of dental tools should consider sedation dentistry, which allows patients to receive dental treatments in comfort, without any anxiety.
According to Dr. Orth, Core Dental uses two common forms of sedation dentistry to put anxious patients at ease: oral conscious sedation, and nitrous oxide sedation. With oral conscious sedation, Dr. Orth says that patients take a small pill prior to their appointment. Once they arrive for the appointment, an anesthetic is administered, and treatment begins. Dr. Orth says that many patients do not notice when the anesthetic is administered, and they often have little memory of the procedure. Sedation effects will last for several hours, post-treatment. Nitrous oxide sedation is better known as "laughing gas" according to Dr. Orth. This type of sedation is quite mild, and keeps the patient extremely relaxed, though observant, during the procedure. Effects of nitrous oxide sedation wear off almost immediately after treatment.
Dr. Orth notes that sedation dentistry has many benefits. Not only does it allow patients to have treatment in a calm, relaxed state, but it also benefits the dentist, who is able to conduct a procedure without any interference or distractions. Additionally, states Dr. Orth, sedation dentistry may benefit patients who need extensive dental work, or who have sensitive teeth, or overactive gag reflexes.
Dr. Orth offers sedation dentistry, and other dental procedures, at Core Dental, near the Red Deer area in Calgary, Alberta. Interested parties are encouraged to find out more at http://www.coredental.ca.
