National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) is a month-long collaboration of professional medical associations, national public service organizations, physicians, and government agencies working together to promote greater awareness and information on breast cancer, and its treatments.
Austin, Texas-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Jennifer Walden, is able to provide this public service message to her patients. Detecting breast cancer as early as possible is crucial, since 1 in every 7 women will be diagnosed with the disease. Dr. Walden says, "It is very important that patients know their family medical history, and their risks for the disease." Dr. Walden also recommends all of her patients speak to their healthcare provider about their personal risk for breast cancer.
"Starting at age 40, every woman should receive an annual mammography. A mammography is a safe and effective breast cancer screening tool, even for women who have breast implants," Dr. Walden continues, "Women should also conduct frequent breast self-exams, and report any unusual changes on their breasts to their healthcare provider, who should also conduct a yearly breast exam."
Women with breast implants should inform their radiologist of the implants prior to the mammography being performed as breast implants can obscure mammography to a certain extent depending upon implant size, presence or absence of capsular contracture, and pocket location. Additional implant displacement views, called Eklund views, help the radiologist to see the breast tissue as the implant is pushed toward the chest wall away from breast tissue.
Like many women, Dr. Walden also has a personal connection to breast cancer. Her own mother was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 68, and later had a mastectomy and microvascular reconstructive breast surgery. She is now considered cured. "Fortunately, a screening mammogram saved her life, and each year, millions of women benefit from this exam," Dr. Walden says, "I encourage all women of high risk and age 40 and older to schedule their own mammogram this year."
