An arm lift is the ideal plastic surgery solution for women who desire to be rid of excess underarm fat, flabbiness and extra skin. The procedure's popularity has drastically increased in recent years, and with advances in surgery techniques and safety, the procedure will only continue to become increasingly popular, according to board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Mark H. Schwartz.

"Many women are opting to undergo an arm lift in order to achieve the look of thin, youthful-looking arms," explains Dr. Schwartz. "Aging, gravity and weight fluctuations can naturally cause the upper arm tissue to become lax, and a brachioplasty procedure gives the patient's arms a slimmer, more proportionate appearance."

Since 2000, upper arm lift surgeries increased by more than 4,000 percent, according to an annual report released by the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS). This spike is mostly attributed to brachioplasty procedures, which consists of removing extra skin and fat from the upper arm, while also tightening the underlying supportive tissues. Depending on the amount of extra fat, liposuction can also be performed during the procedure.

At Dr. Mark Schwartz's NYC practice, a brachioplasty is typically performed with a twilight anesthetic with sedation and can take from one to three hours, depending on the extent of skin and fat removal required. Those with only a minor amount of excess skin may opt to undergo a minimal incision arm lift, a procedure that requires a shorter incision in the underarm area.

A physical exam and discussion of the patient's individual goals for the surgery helps determine which arm lift procedure is right for achieving their desired arm lift results with a recovery that is as gentle and easy as possible. At Dr. Schwartz's New York City practice, patients are usually able to return home the same day as their procedure.

"This procedure is ideal for patients who have a significant amount of excess, loose, hanging skin or fat in the upper arm area," Dr. Schwartz says. "More and more men and women of various ages are choosing to get an arm lift, and most patients are highly satisfied with the results."
