Dr. Mark Epstein has the perfect body contouring procedure for those who would like to remove unsightly excess fat and loose, stretched-out skin from their lower abdominal area.
Whether the excess skin is a result of the body having experienced substantial changes due to pregnancy or dramatic weight loss, it can be extremely difficult to tone and tighten one's midsection using diet and exercise alone. A mini-abdominoplasty allows for those with lower stomach skin overhang to remedy the problem while only acquiring a scar that will be discreetly hidden in their waist crease.
Dr. Epstein, director of the Center for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Stony Brook, performs the procedure on men and women who would like to improve the appearance of their stomach but whose condition is not severe enough to warrant a full abdominoplasty. Although the two are similar, there are several distinct differences between a mini tummy tuck and a standard tummy tuck.
For one, a mini-abdominoplasty usually requires a smaller incision that is not quite as long as the standard abdominoplasty procedure. With a standard tummy tuck, an incision is made around the umbilicus, but not for a mini tummy tuck, during which the skin is lifted up off the abdominal wall only up to the level of the navel. This makes the mini-tummy tuck ideal for those whose upper abdomen area does not have substantial amounts of loose skin, but who would like to be rid of their lower tummy "pooch".
Because only the lower half of the abdomen is operated on, as opposed to the entire abdomen, the recovery for a mini-abdominoplasty can be a little easier than the standard tummy tuck. However, patients should not select a mini-tummy tuck over a standard tummy tuck in hopes of having less down time, as both procedures require approximately the same amount of recovery time.
Those who opt for a mini-abdominoplasty and then later decide that they would like to a have standard abdominoplasty — such as after having another child — will safely be able to do so. Having a mini tummy tuck not prevent one from being able to undergo a "full" tummy tuck later on.
