Manhattan Dermatologist, Dr. Howard Sobel Explains the Comparative Advantages Dysport Has Over BOTOXFeatured PR

Many patients who want to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles turn to some form of injectable filler. Among the number of effective fillers is Dysport, an FDA-approved injection treatment that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles. Similar to BOTOX®, Dysport is injected directly into the area of wrinkles to paralyze the underlying muscles and keep them from contracting.

A large advantage that Dysport has over BOTOX is that Dysport can diffuse muscles one to three centimeters from the injection point, while Botox can only reach as far as one centimeter, allowing for results that reach further areas with just a single injection, according to Dr. Sobel.

The Dysport injection treatment was developed in Europe in the early '90s, and has been used effectively ever since. It has also been used in the US under the name Reloxin, but was FDA-approved under its original name, Dysport. In April 2009, Dysport was approved by the FDA for use in the US. The ease of use and effectiveness of Dysport rivals Botox, and it is on its way to becoming one the most popular cosmetic procedure.

Similar to BOTOX, Dysport is made from a protein extracted from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This material was originally used to control motor disorders and involuntary muscle spasms by immobilizing the targeted muscles.

One of the reasons that Dr. Sobel's patients love Dysport is that the results are visible within one to seven days after treatment. Most patients see results on day three. With less protein than Botox, Dysport is broken down more slowly by the body, and can provide results that last as long as 13 months.

According to Dr. Sobel aging skin loses its elasticity and the areas where muscles repeatedly contract become permanent lines and wrinkles. This is common on the forehead and around the eyes and mouth. Dysport immobilizes these muscles to restore a youthful and well-rested expression to the face, and actually trains the muscles to contract less often after several treatments.

Dysport injections are ideal for nearly any patient who wishes to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face and restore a younger and more refreshed appearance.
