As we age, our skin loses its elasticity. When the skin loses its elasticity, its appearance becomes saggy. This is not a look that anyone wants to have, especially since it can often be painful as well as embarrassing. Fortunately, advances in surgical procedures have led to improvements to correct the look of saggy skin.
Dr. Nolan Karp, of KCNY Plastic Surgeon in New York, recommends belt lipectomy (known as a "body lift") to correct the appearance of dimpled, irregular skin surfaces on the upper legs and torso. These irregular skin surfaces are more widely-known as "cellulite."
"Candidates for body lifts are usually those who suffer from loose, inelastic skin on many areas of the body," Dr. Karp explains, "This can be caused by aging, significant weight loss, or childbirth. Body lifts are not intended for excess fat removal on their own, which is why they are sometimes combined with an additional surgery, such as liposuction. This is done so that the correct body proportion is maintained." Body lifts tighten and tone areas such as the buttocks, abdomen, and hips.
During the body lift procedure, skin is lifted from the core tissue, muscles are tightened and stitched, fat is removed, and the skin is sutured closed according to Dr. Karp. It is often necessary to remove the navel and replace it in a new position. Surgical tubes may also be needed for a few days to drain any fluid, and patients may need to wear compression garments to make faster healing possible.
"Results are visible immediately," Dr. Karp adds, noting that he encourages patients to walk as soon as they are able to, although any strenuous activities or exercise should be limited for about a month.
Dr. Karp offers plastic surgery consultations in New York City. Interested parties are encouraged to schedule an appointment at 212-355-5779.
