The world's population depends on a variety of grains for their daily source of carbohydrates, nutrients, fibers, minerals and vitamins, etc. In fact, grains continue to be the main dish for all meals in many countries around the world. But are all of them healthy, and what are the different types of grain? Dr. Adam Scott attempts to answer some common questions related to grains through his health articles.

Dr. Scott is a medical school graduate from the New York Medical College and a retired physician who practiced from his own clinic. He is now a freelance medical writer who likes to share information about little known facts.

"Although wheat, rice and corn continue to remain the most popular grains in the market, there are hundreds of other types of grains that are now making a comeback. These are often more healthy than traditional choices," says Dr. Scott.

He cites the example of Amaranth. "This is one of the earliest known grains and is high in protein. In fact, a single serving of Amaranth can meet about 7% of protein and 42% of iron requirements in a day," he says. They're a perfect choice as a breakfast cereal and are often found in graham crackers.

Millet on the other hand is known to protect the body against cardiovascular diseases as well as Type-2 diabetes. There is also Quinoa which is known to contain more minerals than any other grain - about 16% of total dietary protein requirement. They are easy to cook and easy to digest as well.

There are so many other types of grains that are far healthier than conventional choices. But a lack of awareness therefore makes them less popular. Dr. Scott's effort is to make these ancient grains popular.
