While avoiding skin cancer is the ultimate goal of any patient, some men and women are unfortunately forced to shift their focus from prevention to treatment. Thankfully, however, when cancer strikes, patients today have a host of treatment options to rely on - none considered more effective than Mohs Micrographic Surgery. Seattle Dermatologist, Dr. Jennifer Reichel, was on hand to discuss the topic, highlighting the vital importance of patient education.
"Mohs micrographic surgery has been shown to be the most effective skin cancer treatment available to patients today," explains Dr. Reichel. "The process involves the systematic removal and microscopic analysis of thin layers of tissue at the tumor site. This process repeats until the last traces of the cancer have been eliminated."
No stranger to Mohs surgery, Dr. Reichel devotes approximately half of her practice to skin cancer surgery. Fellowship trained by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American College of Mohs Surgery, Dr. Reichel graduated from her fellowship in 2005.
Highlighting important benefits of this cutting-edge approach, Dr. Reichel went on to offer this: "Mohs surgery is a state-of-the-art procedure that offers a cure rate of up to 99%, and has the lowest rate of cancer recurrence than any skin cancer surgery," explains Dr. Reichel. "A less-invasive solution, Mohs surgery also works to preserve healthy tissue and minimize scarring."
Dr. Reichel - who is also considered one of the area's top cosmetic dermatologists - went on to explain how her Mohs surgery experience works to inform the cosmetic end of her practice. "Learning skin cancer surgery is the mainstay of understanding the layers of the face and understanding cosmetic treatments."
Offering advice to those exploring skin cancer treatment for the first time, Dr. Reichel concluded with this: "While a skin cancer diagnosis can be an overwhelming moment for any patient, it is important to understand that treatment is available. I encourage patients to explore all their options, and find out more about the many benefits of Mohs surgery."
