Rhinoplasty remains one of today's most popular plastic surgery procedures. A time-tested approach to resizing and reshaping the nose, many providers are now promoting novel or trendy rhinoplasty methods. New York's Dr. Robert Guida was on hand to discuss this shift, and how he's championing a back-to-basics surgical approach that he's calling "rational rhinoplasty."
"Rational rhinoplasty is centered on a graduated, incremental decision making process, utilizing the least invasive techniques to achieve the most effective and natural results," explains Dr. Guida. "While some providers have been moving away from this notion, it's important to understand that new techniques are not necessarily conducive to the best results."
Offering insight into the current climate of the plastic surgery industry, Dr. Guida offered this: "Many plastic surgeons aim to attract new patients by promoting 'cutting-edge' rhinoplasty techniques, such as rib grafting, extracorporal septoplasty, and silicone injections," reports Dr. Guida. "Often, these are being advertised by surgeons who do not possess the skill or experience to perform a traditional 'rational rhinoplasty' procedure."
Dr. Guida also offers advice to those exploring nose surgery for the first time. "Firstly, patients need to understand the importance of consulting with a board certified facial plastic surgeon. These are men and women who have demonstrated knowledge and experience above and beyond regular medical school," explains Dr. Guida. "Furthermore, ensure that your surgeon has adequate experience in traditional rhinoplasty methods. If he or she is promoting a new technique that sounds too good to be true, it very well may be."
Speculating on the future of rhinoplasty, Dr. Guida concluded with this: "Traditional, 'rational rhinoplasty' remains one of today's most effective and time-tested procedures. In an industry where trendy procedures come and go, we are confident that more and more patients will begin to understand the importance of a back-to-basics approach to nose surgery."
