The Lawyer Mediators Group are highlighting the findings of a recent report published by the Marriage Foundation which shows that a 'good divorce' holds the key to a successful marriage second time around.
According to the report entitled 'Second Marriage: Triumph of Decision Over Hope?' and contrary to popular belief, second marriages fare better with 31 per cent ending in divorce, compared to 45 per cent of first marriages. Clare Thornton from The Lawyer Mediators Group explained: "The Marriage Foundation's report on second marriages underlines what we've known for some time. Sadly, for many couples divorce is often hugely traumatic - so much so that that when they take the plunge for the second time they want to be one hundred per cent certain that the marriage will stand the test of time."
The Lawyer Mediators Group is a group of mediators who are also practising solicitors, barristers and legal professionals. They work with couples going through separation to help them resolve the contentious issues that often surround children, property and family finances. "Whilst mediation has long been recognised as an effective way for couples to step back from the brink and avoid divorce, we believe that when divorce is the only option, working with a lawyer mediator who has a full, working knowledge of the law is an effective way for couples to keep damage to their family to a minimum.
"Of course there's no such thing as a 'good divorce' but because our team of mediators have the skills and knowledge to guide couples towards their own solutions, we can help them to arrive at amicable resolutions, often far quicker than they would if they were separating through the courts. Divorce in itself isn't necessarily wrong; it's how couples go about it that can make all the difference.
"When couples opt for mediation during divorce they are helping to preserve family relationships whilst giving them the best possible opportunity to build a positive, happy future. If a divorce is nasty, resentment can linger for years, poisoning future relationships too." said Clare.
