While dentures are a common option for patients who have experienced tooth loss, this popular restoration method is not without its limitations. Over time, it's easy for dentures, particularly those in the lower mouth, to become loose, causing clicking, sores, gagging, and more. Dr. Kim Orth of Calgary's Core Dental took a moment to speak on this issue, explaining how patients are combating loose lower dentures through the use of mini dental implants.

"When patients experience loose lower dentures, the solution is typically to use denture adhesives," Dr. Orth explains. "However, these adhesives can be messy, and they're not always the most effective option. Mini dental implants are a more stable alternative, providing much-needed relief and support to patients dealing with loose dentures."

Expanding on the emerging role of mini dental implants, Dr. Orth explains that, "While a traditional implant is a hollow screw about 4-5mm in diameter, a mini implant is solid, and only has a diameter of roughly 2mm. These smaller implants are also narrower, allowing them to fit into thin areas of bone, helping especially in older patients who have experienced bone loss. They also work to stimulate bone growth, which helps to anchor and support the implant over time."

Offering insight into what patients can expect during the procedure, Dr. Orth offered this: "The procedure is similar to that of conventional dental implants. Your dentist will numb the area, and drill holes for the implants to be placed in. Once they insert and screw in the implants, sockets will be positioned on the denture's base, and placed on top of the implant. This easy procedure leaves patients with stable, strong dentures, correcting any looseness the patient may have experienced."

"Mini dental implants provide a number of patient-side benefits," Dr. Orth explains. "They're designed to help your dentures function like natural teeth, allowing patients to talk and chew comfortably. Additionally, their placement typically only requires a single, 2-hour session, and patients can expect to feel the stability of their mini implants in just a few days."

Speaking about how patients can take the first step, Dr. Orth concluded with this: "It's not uncommon for dentures to become loose, and thankfully there are treatment options available. Mini dental implants present an important new option for patients, and we encourage anyone to reach out to us for more information."
