LJB Security Training, a CT security training school, has recently written and released an article that examines Bureau of Labor Statistics data on the work environment of security officers. The Bureau is a federal body, attached to the Labor Department, whose main task is gathering a wide spectrum of data about employment in the United States. Some of the data categories include pay breakdown, information on workplace conditions, injury statistics, and professional work environment.

While many occupations have a relatively stable and specific work environment, a security guard's workplace is difficult to describe, since there are so many locations and objects that require security services, and the number increases every year as concerns over crime and terrorism affect more institutions.

The article by LJB relies on BLS descriptions to provide an overview of the most common industries that require the services of security guards; many work for government on both local and federal levels, with transportation security being a major priority in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

Other major industries include casinos and other gambling establishments, hospitals and government offices. More and more schools, both state and private, have been hiring security guards in order to protect students from random violence both by other students, and by outside attackers. This trend has accelerated markedly since the tragedy in Newtown last December.

The article goes on to describe the physical demands of the work, which are usually relatively low, although the guard is often required to spend long portions of the working day standing, making the job less suitable for people who suffer from back pain, leg pain or other similar issues.

The long periods of little activity are broken in case of a security threat, which may come suddenly and require physical exertion. While most security guards don't have the legal authority to restrain offenders, they may still need to run or, in rare cases, fight off attackers; therefore, the best-suited individuals for security guard work need to both be in good physical shape, and have the patience to carry through an uneventful shift.
