A recent survey by the British Pest Association has shown that there were more call outs in Hammersmith and Fulham than in any other place in the UK.
Incidents of rodents, cockroaches, ants and rats have been plaguing residents of Hammersmith and Fulham more than in any other of the 314 local authorities. On average there were around 12 residents per 1,000 that required pest control services to eradicate their pests.
The biggest problem in the borough was bed bugs, with 243 homes affected, with 136 homes case of cockroaches, which equates to one resident in every 1,250. Residents called out pest control services for rates 286 times.
However these figures show just the council figures of cases reported, and as one of London's leading pest control specialists we are aware that this figure could be far higher.
Akeel Jaffar runs HLA Pest Control in London, who specialises in bed bug infestations in hotels and guest houses and can help businesses put in place a commercial pest control strategy to tackle a problem before it gets out of hand. They offer advice to hotels and businesses in London to help tackle the rise following the events of summer 2012. HLA Pest Control has seen a 25% increase in call outs for the last three months compared to the same period in 2011. Akeel Jaffar says:
"In 2012 we had a huge increase in call outs for bed bugs, rat and mice infestations and other pests. This is due to the surge in tourism to London this year, and also the milder wetter weather that has given pests the perfect breeding conditions. Many rodents have been forced to look for shelter and dry dwellings due to the continued wet weather and rising water table caused by melting snow.
"Our advice is, if you think you have a pest in your home, tackle it head on straight away. Many reputable companies aren't as expensive as you think, and often provide a free call out service to give you advice and help with your pest problem. The worst thing you can do is bury your head in the sand hoping the pests will go away because they won't - the problem will simply get worse.
"It's believed that this rise could be due to the recent government austerity measures that were put in place recently, which meant that budgets were being hit having implications for both public health and quality of life of the residents."
