Sadly for many couples, the end of the Christmas break means the end of their marriage, so much so that the first working day in January is often referred to by divorce lawyers as 'Divorce Day'. Many couples choose to separate in the New Year, often due to the added stresses, strains and financial pressures that Christmas brings.
In response to the steady rise in costly divorce cases, the government would like couples to consider using third-party mediation for divorce services, such as those offered by The Lawyer Mediators Group. Liz Fyfe from The Lawyer Mediators Group explained: "The mediation route can be up to eight times cheaper and takes a quarter of the time that going through the divorce courts does.
"The mediation process involves working with an independent, qualified mediator who will guide couples through discussions on areas of their divorce that are often the most contentious, such as childcare arrangement and the dividing up of assets."
The legal route to divorce has come under criticism recently for taking too long, being very costly and for encouraging couples to turn to the courts to argue over matters that could easily be resolved outside court, such as changing the days on which they have contact with their children.
"We've long advocated the mediation route as a less traumatic way to divorce. Sadly many couples waste money on expensive and very traumatic court hearings that end up taking far longer than they should to resolve. By using mediation services such as ours, we can help couples find a quicker, simpler approach to divorce that brings better outcomes for the whole family," explained Liz Fyfe.
The Lawyer Mediators Group is a team of independent qualified mediators who are also practising lawyers, barristers and legal executives. "We strongly believe that our mediation services can help couples achieve the best results for themselves and their families. By using a lawyer mediator, couples will have the reassurance of knowing that the mediator fully understands the law, helping ensure that any agreements reached are practical and will meet the needs of everyone involved," said Liz.
