3. Create a written plan for success in targeted areas of your life with support from a family member, friend, mentor, professional, a class, a good book, or a self-help recording: save more money monthly; cut up credit cards; improve relationships by spending more quality time with loved ones (name specific individuals); begin a fitness routine, to name a few. Determine in advance how you will deal with any obstacles that may arise, and identify support systems to help you stay on track.

4. Be positive, and say to yourself, "I can do this." Focus your mindset on what you want to do rather than what you should not do. For example, instead of thinking about not smoking, focus on deep breathing or drinking more water.

5. Think of setbacks as learning experiences so you can do better next time. Be gentle and encouraging with yourself.

6. Talk to people who have done what you want to do. Model their efforts to become successful in your own way.

7. Realize you have a choice. Taking the first step in the right direction reinforces your willpower.

8. Reward yourself for small steps to success: go to a movie, buy a small gift or a new outfit, visit a friend, etc.

9. Create cards with motivational affirmations, reasons, and benefits to help you stick to your plan. Read them to yourself several times a day. Keep a message on a mirror in your home and carry others in your wallet to read whenever you have a free moment.

10. Keep a journal of your progress to record your success rate. This practice gives you an accurate evaluation of daily improvement.
