The AA has warned that plans to allow drivers to buy their tax disc without proof of car insurance is ridiculous and should not go ahead.
The Government is proposing that databases of driver's insurance details will be used to check that drivers have valid insurance, rather than seeing paper copies.
The AA has warned that by allowing people to buy insurance without an insurance certificate will lead to an increase in people driving illegally and without insurance cover either as an oversight or deliberately. This is especially the case with young people who could be avoiding the high premiums on their insurance due to their high risk of death or injury whilst in their vehicle.
The Government claims that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency's records are regularly updated with the Motor Insurance Database, which identifies those without insurance. Currently, drivers can purchase their tax disc online without proof of an MOT or insurance certificate, as this is checked against a database.
The AA believes that the new Government plans are sending out the wrong message to drivers and will undo any of the progress made by the Motor Insurance Bureau, the Government and insurers who, combined, are tightening up the driving laws in this country.
Paul Beresford runs Defensive Driver Training. DDT offers defensive and advanced driver training to help keep the roads, and its drivers safe and secure. DDT helps to train company, fleet and personal drivers keeping insurance and repair costs down. He says:
"This is a simple check that is being eradicated, and given that it's only made six months or a year per person it seems to some to be an irrelevant thing to do, giving out the message that they can delay or put off getting insurance cover. If this becomes law, there will be an increase of people driving without cover, and this in itself will cost authorities and the Courts time and money. "
