Belfast City Council has warned people that they must winter proof their homes against mice and rats over the winter period otherwise they could be in for a shock.
Mice and rats can squeeze through the tiniest holes - about the size of a pencil's diameter or the size of hole made by a hole-punch. It sounds impossible but this is what is happening all over Ireland and the UK during the winter months.
Mice are much more agile than rats and so are much more difficult to get rid of. However, in some cases rats can be tricky to catch because if anything new is introduced to their environment they tend to stay away from it for up to five days until they get used to it. Rats are much more hardy and resilient - and will often stand their ground when frightened, whereas mice could drop dead of fright.
In the last six years there have been many more incidents of both rat and mouse infestations reported to the council. In Belfast alone there are over 2,500 incidents reported with requests to treat the problem.
The problem with relying on a council to tackle the issue, is that during the winter months there is a backlog of cases and rats and mice breed at alarming rates.
When it comes to getting rid of rats and mice, poisoning them is very effective but comes with its own problems. Often the bodies will be unreachable, and will rot and cause an offensive odour in the home. It can also attract other pests such as flies, which could linger for up to five months.

"As soon as you have an inclination that you have a mice or rat infestation - droppings, noises, nibbled food or cables - give the professionals a call to ensure that the problem is dealt with straight away. You often cannot rely on the council to act quickly on your behalf. It's also important to put preventative measures in place and call a professional to carry out mouse blocking to prevent them getting into your home in the first place. In addition, keep your gardens maintained, pick up litter and make sure that your bin lids are shut at all times, and ensure that your shed is at least 18in off the ground. In addition, avoid feeding birds in winter as this food will attract mice and rats who will then shelter from the cold weather in your home. "
