If you have read a news article, or heard a newscast anytime in the previous couple of years, chances are, you would have heard about 3D printing. If you run a business, you might even have got fliers and advertisements of 3D printing companies offering a variety of 3D printing services. But do you know what exactly is this new technology, and why does it look like it can give you the power to get products of daily use out of a printer. Read on to find out more about this revolutionary new technique that is changing the world.

What is 3D printing?

Put simply, 3D printing is the new technique that lets you ‘print’ objects in three dimensions. Everyone is aware of traditional printing where a printer makes marks on a piece of paper or other substances. This is printing in two dimensions. With 3D printing, you can program the printer with parameters for creating simple as well as intricate objects that are then extruded by the machine. It is proving to be a new manufacturing technique that is quicker, cleaner, and less wasteful than traditional manufacturing. Although it is not yet being used for large objects due to issues of scaling, most experts believe that in the future we will see more and more 3D printers being used, especially in companies manufacturing small components as the cost of manufacturing is expected to come down further.

How it works?

The way this technology works is quite simple if you want to know as a user. Without going into technical details, you just need to know that the object to be printed is designed on your computer using one of many design software such as CAD. The image is saved and is then sent to the printer to be printed and voila, you have the object in your hand. The major difference with traditional printing is that the parameters need to be inputted in three dimensions so that the printer knows which component to put where. The design is sliced into hundreds and thousands of layers and the layers are printed over each other making the final result a three dimensional object.

There are 5 main methods by which 3D printers work. These are -

1. Sterelithography (SLA)
2. Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)
3. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
4. Polyjet Photopolymer
5. Syringe Extrusion

The future

3D printing is changing the way many companies are doing business. Apart from the impact it is having on manufacturing, it is also changing industries such as 3D animation services, 3D rendering services, 3D modeling services, and even video animation services. A company doing 3D animation now has the tools to show its clients how their product will look like while someone trying to do a 3D rendering can get a better idea of what the design will come out to be. 3D printing is already proving to be a disruptive technology that is sure to become a game changer in the near future. Just sit back and enjoy as human ingenuity takes another quantum leap for humankind.
